Classification of Transmission lines

Transmission line are neural scheme of electrical system. Because it transfer electrical energy from power stations to different locations. To transmit electrical energy suitable conductor and transmission system is necessary. This article study about classification of transmission lines basis on distance travelled by electrical energy through conductor. Because load center are not lumped at single place. It will be spread to all over area.

A transmission lines are used in transmission system has different types of parameters. They are

  1. Resistance
  2. Inductance
  3. Capacitance

According to consideration of above parameters classification of transmission lines are as follows

  1. Short Transmission lines
  2. Medium Transmission lines
  3. Long Transmission lines

1. Short Transmission lines

This short transmission lines are travelled from generating station to load center (or) secondary transmission to distribution stations. These transmission lines maximum up to 50 kilometer only. The maximum voltage carrying by short transmission line is 20KV. As it travels short distance shunt capacitance are neglected. Resistance and inductance parameters are considered for analysis about it.

2. Medium Transmission line

These medium transmission lines are particularly travelled from generating stations to grid and grid to secondary distribution lines. These transmission line length is varies from 50 kilometer to 150 kilometer. The voltage level is 20KV to 100KV. As sufficient length of line and higher voltage level, shunt capacitance are considered along with resistance and inductance parameters. It is also noted that capacitance are distributed along length of line. But for analysis purpose it is lumped and considered as single capacitance.

3. Long Transmission line

These long transmission lines are travel to very log distances. It mainly used used to connect one central grid to another grid (or) power stations to grid. The length of long transmission line is more than 150 kilometer. These lines are carries more than 100 KV. As transmission line is very long and voltage level also so high, shunt capacitance are considered. Shunt capacitance are not lumped like medium transmission lines. They are distributed uniformly along with entire length lines.
